Back at IrishFest again today! Since I’m a technophile (geek) I’ll be periodically playing with Qik on my iPhone. Go to http://blog.aliwolly.com/qik/ to see some live broadcasts.

I actually started off today by getting up early and doing something healthy – I did my Pilates video and then went for a walk. I was dressed like a slob – black cropped yoga pants and a tank top with my over-sized Enter The Haggis hoodie, all coated with white cat fur and feathers from our down comforter – and my hair was crappy but I figured that it wouldn’t matter because I couldn’t possibly run into that many people while I was out on my walk. Turns out I was wrong. I had my music playing pretty loudly on my iPhone but kept thinking that I heard fire engines and bagpipes. Then I turned a corner and ran right into a parade.
That was pretty unexpected. Apparently today was Niska-Day. I really like Niskayuna – it’s so cute. The houses in our neighborhood (well, actually the Niskayuna neighborhood that is adjacent to our Schenectady neighborhood) are so freaking adorable. I wish that the owners of this house would randomly decide to move and also sell us their too-cute-for-words house for a very affordable price:

Sooooooooo cute!!
We went to Amy & Leigh’s house up in Cossayuna for their daughter, Morgan’s, first birthday party. The drive up was soooooo much longer than we remembered it to be. We ended up leaving for the party a little late and then didn’t get to their house until almost 5 – when the party was scheduled to end. We had a really nice time and stayed much longer than we expected. Our plan was to grab dinner on our way back into Saratoga and then go to the Parting Glass to meet up with Dodi and Scott and see Hair of the Dog. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to dinner until around 8:30pm and our waitress was pretty terrible so we weren’t done with dinner until after 10pm. Since the show started at 8 and we’d be getting there over 2 hrs late and we were both tired, we just headed home.
On the way home on Route 50 there was a sobriety check by the Saratoga Sheriff’s department. Alex was driving and has nothing to worry about but he kind of clammed up when the cop shined the light in the car and asked us where we were coming from. “Dinner!” I said, from the passenger seat. “Oh yeah? Where’d you have dinner?” “Uno’s.” “Oh! Uno’s in Saratoga – I mean, Wilton?” “Yeah.” “Was it good?” “No.” The cop did a double-take. I love responding to people in the exact opposite way that they expect. I love to watch their reactions. I think I get this from my Dad… The cops started laughing and talking to each other as they waved us on. “She said dinner at Uno’s in Wilton was bad – ha ha ha! You should totally call and order six pizzas and then never show up!” Alex and I thought it was funny that a cop advised us to totally dick the restaurant over.
So today was a good day overall, though I wish that we’d gotten to the Foster’s earlier so that we could have made it to hang out with Dodi and Scott and see HOTD tonight – it’s been so long since we’ve been able to do either of those things!

That was a shout from a group of drunk college kids as they passed by Beck holding Nora at the St Patrick’s parade in Albany on Saturday. Beck had dressed Nora in the little green sweater we gave her for Christmas, along with a shamrock pacifier, so she looked very festive for the occasion, especially with her red hair. We didn’t spend the whole parade with Beck and Kevin and Nora, but stood across the street with the rowdy crowd near the now closed Pauly’s. We didn’t drink much, mostly because we didn’t bring any beer along and had to get by “on the kindness of strangers.” We caught up with Beck, Kevin, and Nora after the parade passed us by and we were able to make it across the street. That’s when we took the picture above. I love that picture – Nora looks like she’s contemplating the Irish baby comment.
We went to the Pump Station after we left the parade route where we had a late lunch and listened to the Schenectady Pipe Band as they serenaded the crowd from the private party area above. That is becoming a tradition for us, after we stumbled upon that post parade performance a couple of years ago. We had a nice time.
I was impressed with Alex’s patience as he held Nora throughout the meal. Of course, he thought that it was fine to give her carrot sticks with chicken wing sauce on them, but otherwise he was a natural.
We went to dinner with Steve and Danielle in Saratoga much later that night and then met Amy and Leigh at the Parting Glass to see Hair of the Dog. They did a great show! They did a great version of “Sweet Caroline” that got the entire room dancing and singing along. The energy was amazing!
The rest of our weekend and our St Patrick’s day today was quiet. Alex is sick – he got my nasty flu. We stayed in and cuddled on the couch all day yesterday. Today, I had to work, but Alex met me and a few of my peeps from my department for a pint over lunch. Then we went to Pinhead Susan’s for dinner where we had corned beef and cabbage (which was not half as good as when I make it but we never got to the store yesterday) and some Guinness while a bagpiper and later a local band, St James Gate, played. We didn’t stay too long, though, since Alex felt sickly.
So it was sort of a quiet St Patrick’s day weekend for us, but still a good one. Hopefully we’ll be over our illnesses in a week and a half when the real party happens – Enter the Haggis at Revolution Hall on the 29th. Can’t wait!!!
