… because I have really crappy memory skills.
Last night, I went to Crossgates with Dodi and my sister to see “Baby Mama”. Alex would not go see that movie – I think because he thinks it’ll give me “ideas”. Whatever. I have no ideas about that yet – we are waaaaaaaaay too much in debt to think about supporting another human being anytime soon. I haven’t hung out with Dodi or my sister in forever and so it was a nice excuse to get together and have some “girly” fun. We hit Ruby Tuesday’s first for a quick bite to eat (I had the Fresh Avocado Quesadilla, which was awesome) and a few cocktails (their “$5 handcrafted cocktail of the day” was a Georgia Peach Martini, so I had a few…).
“Baby Mama” only opened last weekend (I think) but it was only playing on one screen of the 18 at Crossgates and it was only sporadically crowded for the 7:20 show. The movie started off kind of abruptly… We’re introduced to Tina Fey’s character (whose name I already forgot) who is very successful, 37 years old, single, and wants a baby. She stares at babies on the street and in elevators and imagines her subordinates are babies… she’s obsessed. She’s unsuccessful getting pregnant with cryo-sperm she gets from a sperm bank and finds out from her doctor that her chances of getting pregnant are “one in a million”. She turns to a private agency created by Sigourney (there is no Dana only Zuel) Weaver that matches unfertile folks up with potential surrogate mothers. Tina Fey is matched up with Amy (can’t remember her last name and too lazy to Google it freaky looking blond from SNL). Hilarity ensues.
After the awkward beginning that gets all of the back story very quickly out of the way, there are just a few points where the movie feels like it’s dragging. Overall the interaction between the two leading ladies is really funny and there are a few hilarious lines. The ending is predictable – but I think that endings for pretty much every comedy out there are pretty predictable. Overall, I enjoyed the movie, but not as much as I hoped to, based on the previews. I’d recommend renting this one.
Tonight, Alex and I went to see Iron Man. We hit the Bangkok Thai Bistro in (“glamorous”) downtown Schenectady first. Our meal was fantastic and even with a few cocktails was pretty inexpensive. I had the Green Garden, which was steamed chicken and vegetables with peanut sauce on the side. The peanut sauce was phenomenal. They bill themselves as a martini bar, so I tried their “Extreme-tini” which was peach schnapps’s, triple sec, amaretto, and “secret ingredients”. It was pretty good… but I didn’t get an “extreme buzz” like one might expect from something called the “extreme-tini”.
Since we wanted to see Iron Man on its opening night, we decided to go to the Bow-Tie theater in downtown Schenectady, right next to Proctor’s. The theater is relatively new – only opened last summer, I think – and has stadium seating, great popcorn, and serves beer (well, you can’t bring the beer into the theater itself (gay) but you can drink it in their cafe area). Since it’s in downtown Schenectady (off the beaten path and still kind of a place where few dare to tread at night), we were able to show up at 9:30 for a 10pm showing of a potential blockbuster movie on its opening night and still get good seats. Rock on.
Iron Man starts out fast and intense and doesn’t let up. Robert Downey Jr does an excellent job as Tony Stark – you want to hate him for being a spoiled rich asshole at the beginning of the movie, but can’t because he’s so freaking charismatic. The story doesn’t drag at any point and the effects are amazing. I even really loved the soundtrack. I’m tired but still all pumped from seeing a great movie so I’m finding it hard to organize my thoughts about this movie the way that I could about “Baby Mama” right now. Iron Man was just awesome.
It was the best movie that I’ve seen in a long time and even though I just saw it tonight, I’d pay to see it again tomorrow.
And now, to bed. One of my peeps left something at the office so I’ll have to meet him there at 10:30 tomorrow AM. Ugh, getting up “early” and having to do something on a Saturday morning blows!
